Solar Water Heating

Key Benefits

  • Heating water is one of the best uses of solar energy. Hot water for your dishwasher, shower, bath tub or jacuzzi, and clothes washing is used on a year round basis during the time when the hours of bright sunshine are the highest. Unlike home heating, in which the greatest heating load takes place during the winter, domestic hot water load is constant and takes place on a year round basis.
This makes the economics of solar hot water excellent.
At Daystar we make solar hot water for a variety of applications and climates.
  • Our Caribbean model consists of a thermosiphon system with no pump or controller because it requires no electricity to operate. It uses a natural heat siphon to move the heated water from the solar collectors to the storage tank located above the collector on the roof. This is possible because the system does not have to contend with freezing temperatures any time during the year. Due to the high altitude and incidence of the sun in the Caribbean our standard system consists of 1 square foot of collector area for every two gallons of storage.

  • Our second model the Californian, consists of a pressurized storage tank, pump, controller, snap switch and a collector area sufficient for 1 square foot of collector area for each gallon of storage. You can use your existing electric tank for storage or for additional hot water we can supply an extra tank. This model is suitable for a climate where there is a low evidence of freezing conditions.
  • The third model, the Canadian, is for climates where freezing conditions occur during a part of the year. Such conditions are experienced in the Northern United States and Canada. This drain back system consists of a non-pressurized 60 gallon storage tank, pump, controller, heat exchanger and solar collector panels sufficient for either 1 square foot for 1 gallon of storage or 2 square feet or collector for 1 gallon storage.

The tank is located near the existing hot water tank inside the home.

  • Unlike closed loop systems which require frequent glycol (anti-freeze) changes and part replacements, such as automatic air vents and pressure relief valves, this system requires little maintenance. No anti-freeze is required with the drain back system because it has a water to water heat exchanger. This means that the only standard maintenance is a periodic topping up of the water in the tank.
Our drain back system is all prefabricated in our state-of-the-art factory, with all of the plumbing and wiring done. All that has to be done is to plug it in and have copper pipe run to the collectors.
The collectors can be new or rebuilt (if supplies are available) and should be mounted on a south facing exposure. The water from the tank is pumped up to these collectors and is drained back to the tank in less than 5 minutes when no sunlight is available for heating.
By installing a solar water heater you can be saving money, conserving energy supplies for future generations and saving the environment.
Your solar system can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5 tonnes per annum and in turn help you reduce your impact on global warming. You also have more hot water which is heated for free by the sun’s energy.
All of Daystar’s equipment is backed by a comprehensive warranty package, 10 years on all our collectors, 5 years on all heat exchange tanks.
